Your strengths are the things you a capable of. There are so many people around who underestimate themselves, there are also plenty who overestimate themselves. 

The former is the greater sin. If you overestimate yourself you can always push yourself and learn what you don't know, although it can lead to burnout. If you understate your capacities then you're hiding from your future success.

The hardest thing for many people is to be truly honest with themselves and others about who they are, what they can do and what they want.

This form will help you evaluate your strengths objectively using the essential categories mentioned in the Lateral Analysis system.

Fears and History.

When thinking about your strengths you necessarily need to look into both your fears and history. Fear arises out of the conditioning of history and so does their conquest. Achievements are the expression of your strengths. Achievements are the overcoming of obstacles. But there is more to strength than the things you do, strength also come from who you are. Sometimes it is keeping quiet and still in order to give respect to someone so that they can feel important, or so they can feel their strength. The Japanese understand that there are times when it is the strongest course is to let someone else express themselves and to protect the other person's right to power. Many people are afraid of this approach because their see strength in terms power expressed, acted on. 

The ability to say 'no' is a great source of power. It represents the power to decide the direction of events when those around are busy making decisions by saying yes to possibilities. 



Understanding what motivates you is an important strength. Even if it is the realisation that you are push to avoid dangerous or uncomfortable rather to chase pleasant happy things.

Body and Identity

Working in structured focused ways is central to any achievement, even if your experience is from volunteer work it will still be widely applicable. Having, or at least being able to project, confidence, knowledge, high self-value are great strengths. For some people getting up and doing everyday activities is an expression of strength. For others it is getting up and  scoring gold at the Olympics. Action is decision made with commitment expressed physically, it also includes real talking as opposed to habitual gestures which are used to placate and connect with others. It must be based on a realistic physical understanding of the situation.

Their are different kinds of action. There are habitual activities which express complacency because you are in a safe zone and know the outcome. Then there are situations where the risks are high and you must be very alert. Then comes the variety of possibilities between. So when thinking about your strengths you might consider how you handle different levels of planning, risk and the unexpected. About your capacity to put plans into action.

Family, Friendships and Communication

Strength in relationships is about respect, sensitivity, empathy and listening. Your relationships are key to every success.


The power of structuring knowledge. What you know and feel are only part of the sources of meaning. It comes from the interaction of the context and the action, the feedback and the ripples of affect and effects which spread out from the smaller immediate moment to the big picture.

So being able to place your actions into the larger context and taking it into consideration is fundamental.



How you react to the unknown and the unexpected can decide the outcomes of any goal and maybe profoundly affect the general feeling you have about life.
